Hồi tháng 4/2019, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) đồng ý trả cho Tesla hàng trăm triệu USD nhằm kết nối với hãng xe điện Mỹ và tránh các mức phạt nặng do không đáp ứng tiêu chuẩn khí thải mới ở châu Âu. Sau đó, Ford và Volvo cũng có ý tưởng tương tự. Và giờ đây, đến lượt Honda liên minh với FCA và Tesla.
Tuần trước, Honda đã nộp hồ sơ lên Ủy ban châu Âu (EC) và có thể đáp ứng các quy định về khí thải của tổ chức này trong năm nay. Những quy định này buộc các hãng sản xuất ôtô giảm lượng khí thải trung bình của số xe mới bán ra tại châu Âu với mức CO2 là 95g/km.
Mức phạt cho mỗi một gram vượt quy định là 112 USD và nhân lên theo khối lượng. Ví dụ, với 500.000 xe, sẽ là 58,8 triệu USD cho một gram vượt mức. Lúc này, hãng xe Anh Jaguar Land Rover đang đối mặt mức phạt 117 triệu USD do không đáp ứng quy định trên.
Hiện chưa rõ Honda sẽ phải trả bao nhiêu để mua lại hạn mức. Trong khi đó, Mike Manley, Giám đốc điều hành của FCA từng nói với các nhà phân tích hồi tuần trước, rằng hãng của ông sẽ trả hết tiền cho Tesla trong năm tới nhờ sự giúp đỡ để đạt các tiêu chuẩn khí thải.
Liên minh của Ford và Volvo cũng không hé lộ con số cụ thể. Thương hiệu xe Thụy Điển nói rằng họ vẫn có thể giúp các đối thủ đạt mục tiêu năm nay.
Liên minh châu Âu (EU) cho phép các hãng xe khác nhau (thậm chí là đối thủ của nhau) chia sẻ, trao đổi hạn mức khí thải nhằm tránh các khoản phạt rất nặng. Những trường hợp khác có thể nêu ra, như Volkswagen đã ký thỏa thuận với MG sau khi phải hoãn ra mắt dòng xe điện mới. Renault cũng từng nói rằng sẽ đồng ý lập đối tác cho một quỹ khí thải mở
