Bitcoin adalah mata uang kriptografi pertama. Prinsip cryptocurrency itu sendiri pada prinsipnya telah dijelaskan oleh Satoshi Nakamoto dalam sebuah artikel berjudul 'Bitcoin: Sistem Uang Elektronik Antara Rekan' yang dapat diakses di halaman Bitcoin.org.
